“Herod in Jerusalem impatiently awaited the return of the wise men. As time passed, and they did not appear, his suspicions were aroused. The unwillingness of the rabbis to point out the Messiah's birthplace seemed to indicate that they had penetrated his design, and that the magi had purposely avoided him. He was maddened at the thought. Craft had failed, but there was left the resort to force. He would make an example of this child-king. Those haughty Jews should see what they might expect in their attempts to place a monarch on the throne.”

       You all know what is coming, the slaughter of the innocents. It might well be that tomorrow's blog may well be empty of comment in deference to the lives of children I hope that we will meet in the Kingdom.

     I somehow doubt that we will be seeing Herod. The outburst above was probably not his first and was likely not to be the last. The tenor of his life was, apparently, self-centred.

     Titled ‘Herod the Great’, in spiritual terms ‘greatness’ does not befit him. Perhaps the tag ‘Great’ refers to his achievements as a builder. We ought to qualify that as we describe the ‘man’. Wikipedia, that fount of all knowledge (but always check what you read there) says this. Herod was, “"the evil genius of the Judean nation", "prepared to commit any crime in order to gratify his unbounded ambition".

     What should we say? The man is having a childish fit. He’s thrown his dummy out. He can’t have his own way. He will have his revenge.

     “Vengeance is mine saith the Lord. I will repay.” God will.
