Return to BlogFebruary 23 - Tomatoes! Really?
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3: 5-6
I do not like to eat tomatoes. Sorry for all you tomato lovers out there, but I just don’t get it. Cake or tomato? Even though I am not a cake lover, cake would win every time, even though I know that the nutritional value of the red thing far outweighs that of the cake. Actually that may be the case even for those of you who get the tomato thing. Just the thought of eating one is enough to make me feel queasy. One year, at camp meeting, I was tricked into having a baby tomato as it was said “they’re so sweet you don’t even know you’re eating a tomato!” Let’s just say it was not one of my most pleasant memories!
When I say that I don’t like eating tomatoes, I don’t mind them squashed, squished, in a sauce or even in a soup, but raw and naked? No thank you! That may seem odd to some of you, but I know someone who can’t eat apples but loves apple juice! I know apples, like tomatoes, are very good for you and for this reason I find a way of getting the goodness into my diet.
So given the choice would I spend time with the tech gadget (mobile phone, games machine, iPad, tablet, Television etc) of my choice or the bible? Even though most of us know that the spiritual value of the bible far outweighs that of any tech gadget, even if it has the bible on it, we would pause before making our choice. But like the red tomato or apple we have to find a way of getting into our system. Reading it to someone, reading it out loud, studying a section as a group, trying to memorise passages. As long as we are getting it into our lives on a daily basis then we will reap the benefits of getting to know God just that little bit more.
