North England Conference – Preaching Training

Scunthorpe Campus

Resources

Session 1

There are five simple resources for you to access here. You will find most of them in the table below. The main resource covers the whole course - and is the complete training guide. Please click here to access the resource, which comes in the form of a PDF file.

I am also giving you the link to the second of the two videos that we looked at. Please note that Julia, the speaker in the video, is an atheist, but in this first section of her presentation we can recognise a path to God that she has followed. There are elements of a sermon here - but this is not a sermon.

The audio of the second session is presented by Pastor Paul Haworth and Pastor Emanuel Bran, we had a recording problem at the Scunthorpe session. from our Nottingham campus.

Session 2

There are currently four resources, made up of 2 PowerPoint presentations and the audio from each of the presentations. We will be adding the quotes that you create for us as part of your homework. These 5 quotes from each chapter should be the five sentences or paragraphs which help you in each chapter to prepare a sermon.

Session 3

Once again we have four resources for you. Pastor Solon Kyriacou spoke on the organisation of a sermon, and the reasons why we organise a sermon. While he did not use PowerPoint we have provided a PowerPoint to remind you of notes you may have taken. The audio is presented as before. Pastor Jeynes spoke on how we classify a sermon. The basic point being made was that we teach you to classify a sermon so that you get the idea that we really want you to aim for a Biblical sermon.

Session 4

There are enough resources to keep you going for a while. Pastor Nambo had been asked to teach about how to assess sermons, and did so by asking the class to assess one of his own sermons - you can do the same by listening to the sermon and using the assessment form we were introduced to. In the second part of the session Pastor Jeynes showed how to construct a topical sermon. Plenty of examples were given and a quiz was worked on - you can access all of the PowerPoints used, the quiz and the audio files in the table below. I am also adding a document that was found to be useful in the Nottingham campus, judging by the times it has been downloaded. This shows how to take a passage apart and understand it's meaning using simple questions. Here is the document.

Session 5

You will find resources for the two parts of the meeting - 'How to construct a textual sermon' by Pastor Vernon Nambo and then Sam Gardner's presentation ''How to construct an expository sermon'.

Session 6

The series of training sessions is coming to an end with two presentations. The first, by Vernon Nambo looked at the importance of arguments to support an idea - and how to use and develop illustrations. The second session, taken by Peter Jeynes, looked at how to develop an introduction and conclusion. During the presentation we worked on different types of illustration. A simple sermon was used as the base and students added their own illustrations. Here is that sermon.

One element of your homework is the creation of six sermon outlines. If you would like to use a pre-prepared form we have created click here to download the form. A sample sermon outline is given along the location of definitions of the types of sermon we want outlined. The document is in Word format so that you can expand the form to suit the size of your writing or the depth of your outline.
